In Kota Kinabalu, Grab is all you need to get around. You hail a ride from the app, the fare is locked in upfront, and you can pay by card. We've also put together some basic phrases for taxis and everyday use.

Grab — The Answer for Getting Around
- Open the app → enter your pickup (current location) and destination (e.g. Nexus Resort Karambunai ↔ central KK)
- Choose a vehicle type → confirm the fare locked in upfront → request the ride
- Check the assigned driver, plate number and arrival time → board at the pickup point
- Arrive → automatic card payment or cash. Rate the trip and tip (optional)
| Upsides | No haggling over fares and no overcharging · card payment · a recorded route |
|---|---|
| Watch for | The resort is on the inner peninsula, so matching a car can take time — request with plenty of buffer. For a golf bag, choose a larger vehicle (SUV/van) |
| Taxis | At the airport, the coupon (flat-fare) system is recommended. For regular taxis, confirm meter or flat fare in advance |
Add a payment card to Grab back in Korea and you can get around cash-free on the ground. Setting the destination in English or with a map pin keeps communication with the driver precise (Chapter 3).
Basic Phrases — A Word in English & Malay
At attractions, resorts and restaurants, English will get you where you need to go. A word or two of Malay (Terima kasih = thank you) makes the mood that much warmer.
Fares and car availability fluctuate with the time of day and the weather. During rain showers (squalls), matching a car can be delayed, so leave yourself extra time.
