Saigon's gateway is Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN), right inside the city — just 15–30 minutes from District 1. It's the busiest route from Bangkok, so once you know the arrival flow, getting in is quick.
SGN — an airport inside the city
Tan Son Nhat sits in Tan Binh District of Ho Chi Minh City, so unlike most Southeast Asian cities, the airport is essentially downtown. After landing at the international terminal (T2) you clear immigration → baggage → customs, then reach the District 1 centre in 15–25 minutes off-peak, or about 40 in rush-hour traffic.
Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi BKK / Don Mueang DMK) ↔ Ho Chi Minh is the busiest route in Southeast Asia, flown several times daily by Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet, Thai AirAsia and Thai Airways. A morning arrival leaves plenty of time for a first-day afternoon round — perfect for the Tan Son Nhat night round.
- 1. ImmigrationThai passports are visa-free for 30 days. Use the Foreigners line and simply present your passport — paper arrival/departure cards are generally not used.
- 2. Baggage & customsGolf bags often appear at the oversize belt — check there. With nothing to declare and under ~USD 5,000 in cash, take the green (nothing to declare) channel.
- 3. Money & SIMThe arrivals hall has currency booths and telecom counters. Airport rates are worse than in town, so change only a little; if you bought an eSIM ahead, just switch it on.
- 4. Meeting pointFor private transfers, a driver/guide holds a placard with your name or company at the arrivals exit. The exit is crowded — scan the placards calmly, and call your guide if you can't find them.

Avoid touts pushing “regular taxis” at the terminal entrance — there are cases of rigged meters and overcharging. Use a private transfer or Grab/official taxis (Vinasun, Mai Linh) for a clean, safe ride. The dong has many zeros (e.g., 200,000 VND), so double-check the note denomination.
